St Matthias v Aldridge
Tonight saw our year 8s take on Aldridge in the West Midlands county cup second round and what a game it was!
Starting the game we looked really strong, missing two clear cut chances! We went 1-0 from some smart work on the right hand side by Aldridge. At half time, we planned to come out the block strong and look to apply pressure by maintaining possession of the ball and playing with width.
We did just that, two minutes into the second half Bukhosi gets in a great position to tap it home for 1-1. The game was back and forth with both sides having chances to take the lead. Aldridge played a smart ball through which pierced our defence for their striker to tap the ball home. With two minutes to go, we showed that STM fight with the group working hard and putting in some hard challenges to win the ball back. Two minutes to go, a corner from Isaac on to Jeldi’s head to make it 2-2. You can imagine my celebration, especially after Aldridge being a tough and a very talkative side!
Isaac gets fouled with a minute to go and had a free kick. I thought, this is the moment which he has done many times before and forces a great save from the keeper. Aldridge quickly kicked the ball over the top where the striker was 1 on 1 forcing Thomas to clear, sadly not far enough. The opposition striker takes a touch and hits it from thirty yards - heartache! Got to take your hat off being beaten by a finish like that.
The group were fantastic, can’t fault any of their efforts! Player of the match - Jeldi, an absolute machine for us today! Worked that hard he’s run the sole off his boots!
St Mathias v SWB
St Matthias v Summerhill
The year 9/10 girls team led by Elexus travelled to SWBA to compete in their round robin tournament. We played one game winning 3-0 (Amber N-D x2 and Bethany T x 1) before it was postponed for the night. So proud of the girls, they didn't complain and got on with it considering the weather. The progress from when they first started playing until now was evident straight away!
The year 9 group had a county cup match against a very strong Summerhill side and lost 6-0. The group tried their hardest competing in the weather.
Last fixture of the week tomorrow sees the year 7/8 girls take on Heath Park in the Wolverhampton city cup.
St Matthias v Heath Park
Tonight saw our Year 7/8's take on Heath Park in the West Midlands Cup and WOW... they were amazing!!
Starting the game, we looked a little shaky however as the game went on our confidence grew and we began to play some great football. We went 1-0 up with an amazing goal from Heaydien. At half time we were leading 4-0 thanks to goals from Ilarnah and Heaydien. The girls were buzzing!
However, in the first 10 mins of the second half Heath Park managed to pull it back to 4-3. The girls remained calm and composed working together well as a team. The support they had for one another was amazing to see.
We finished winning the game 6-4 and are through to the next round of the cup. Girl of the game today due to her amazing performance and 5 goals was Heaydien.
